چکیده

This paper proposes a technique for the three-dimensional reconstruction of an underwater environment from multiple acoustic range views acquired by a remotely operated vehicle. The problem is made challenging by the very noisy nature of the data, the low resolution, and the narrow field of view. Our main contribution is a new global registration technique to distribute registration errors evenly across all views. Our approach does not use data points after the first pairwise registration, for it works only on the transformations. Therefore, it is fast and occupies only a small amount of memory. Experimental results suggest the global registration technique is effective in equalizing the error. Moreover, we introduce a statistically sound thresholding (the X84 rejection rule) to improve ICP robustness against noise and nonoverlapping data. c © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

3D Mosaicing for Environment Reconstruction

This paper proposes a technique for the threedimensional reconstruction of an underwater environment from multiple range views. The final target of the work lies in improving the understanding of a human operator guiding an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with an acoustic camera, which provides a sequence of 3D images in real time. Since the field of view is narrow, we devis...

Underwater imaging with a moving acoustic lens

The acoustic lens is a high-resolution, forward-looking sonar for three dimensional (3-D) underwater imaging. We discuss processing the lens data for recreating and visualizing the scene. Acoustical imaging, compared to optical imaging, is sparse and low resolution. To achieve higher resolution, we obtain a denser sample by mounting the lens on a moving platform and passing over the scene. This...

Model Acquisition by Registration of Multiple Acoustic Range Views

This paper deals with the three-dimensional reconstruction of an underwater environment from multiple acoustic range views acquired by a remotely operated vehicle. Our contribution is twofold: first, we introduce a statistically sound thresholding (the X84 rejecti...

3D Scene modelling from multiple range views

This paper presents a new 3D scene analysis system that automatically reconstructs the 3D geometric model of realworld scenes from multiple range images acquired by a Laser Range Finder on board of a mobile robot. The reconstruction is achieved through an integrated procedure including range data acquisition, geometrical feature extraction, registration and integration of multiple views. Differ...
